Tip From the Archives
Skyball
Problem
You hit a sky ball when trying to gain extra distance off of the tee box.
Cure
Sometimes when you try too hard for distance, you allow too much lateral movement during your downswing. This will cause your body to move forward, ahead of the ball. The bottom of the arc of your swing will move ahead and cause too steep of a swing so you end up you skying the ball. Placing the ball too far forward in your stance could also cause skied tee shot.
Therapy
If you want to hit lower drives with extra roll, place the ball opposite of your forward heel but no further than that. If you want the ball to carry longer in the air, then place the ball further in your stance. A good way to prevent your body from sliding forward towards the target during the downswing and flatten out your swinging arc is to swing bow legged. This will allow the clubhead to make a more level contact. To achieve this, try bowing your legs outward while keeping your feet flat throughout the entire swing.
