Shoulder Pain

Problem

You experience shoulder pain the day after a round of golf.

Cure

Shoulder rolls and neck stretches can help ease the tension in your shoulders and help prevent injury. Speak to your doctor or another healthcare professional about the pain because sometimes the pain can be in the joint, making self treatment difficult. If you insist on playing while your shoulder is injured, remember to shorten your swing length. When you hit into the ground it will cause you more pain so you might want to avoid taking divots by using a more sweeping styled swing. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce the inflammation and pain.

Therapy

Try stretching the shoulder muscles on a daily basis and before playing a round of golf. Grab both elbows with the palm of the opposite hand. Pull your arms up so that your forearms are moving just over your head. Now pull your arms to the right so that your left arm is touching your ear. Pull until you feel a good stretch in your shoulder area. Stretch out the other side. Next, warm up your shoulder joint by circling your arms in front of your body while holding onto your elbows. Your arms should pass in front of your forehead, off to the side, and then in front of your navel. Do this five times in both directions. Relax your arms down and curl your shoulders down and in towards your stomach. Now stand up tall with your shoulders pulled back as far as you can and repeat. For rotator cuff exercises, lie on your stomach and stretch your arms out by your head. Try to raise your arms up off of the floor as high as you can. Bend your arms up with your palms turned towards your head. Point your thumbs up and focus on trying to get your elbows up as high off of the ground as possible. Now lay your arms by your side with your palms towards the ceiling. Practice lifting your arms off of the ground. All of these floor exercises should be repeated thirty or more times in a row.
