Shift Like a Pro

Problem

You notice that professional players tend to have a little lateral movement that helps them gain distance. Yet, when you try to add this movement into your swing, it causes you to sway and lose power.

Cure

Many Tour players initialize their forward swing by flexing their leading knee a little towards the target. By doing this, you will be able to get the most out of shifting your body weight forward for a more powerful swing.

Therapy

As you practice your downswing, just think about starting your swing by pointing your knee towards the target. This simple move will give you the lateral movement that you see the pros use as long as it is accompanied with the proper weight shift. If you need a better feel for the weight shift, tee the ball up just in front of your leading foot. Use a middle iron and set up with a narrow stance. Just as you are starting the forward swing, step your leading foot towards the target.
