Shanking Drill

Problem

You contact the ball with the neck of the club or shank the ball when using your irons.

Cure

A quick fix on the course is to keep the blade of the club closed throughout the entire swing. This is because it is very difficult to shank the ball when it is closed; however, it will cause the ball to fly left, so be sure to adjust your aim.

Therapy

When you are shanking your iron shots, try to hit the ball with the toe of the club so that it feels like the toe is going to roll over at impact. After repeating this a dozen or more times, slowly work your way back to a normal swing, keeping this sensation in mind. You can also try placing a tee about an inch outside of the ball so that it is along the target line. Take a normal swing and focus on hitting the ball without moving the tee.
