Seniors Regain Power

Problem

How to compensate for lost distance because of a diminished ability to turn the shoulders due to ageing. Seniors are more likely to bury their chin at address and are therefore unable to turn your shoulders properly.

Cure

The straighter your back, the fuller you can turn and more power is possible. It will be easier to turn your left shoulder under your chin and hit further with all of your clubs if you keep that chin off of your chest. If you already have a good swing, try a driver with a longer shaft.

Therapy

It is very important to keep your shoulders from drooping because this will cause you to lose power. A good way to test this is to sit on the edge of a chair and slouch. Cross your arms and touch your opposite shoulder with each hand. Now try to rotate as you would during a backswing. Notice how difficult it is to rotate while you are slouching. Do the same test with your back straight but this time tilt forward from your hips. It is much easier to turn with your back and shoulders straight. Now set up to the ball while imagining that your head and neck form a straight line from your back. Bend at the hips to tip your chest towards the ball. Suck your stomach in towards your spine and increase your grip and rotate both hands clockwise on the shaft. Place more than half of your weight onto your back leg and tee the ball forward in your stance. You will be accelerating during your forwards swing, so if you place the ball off of your forward foot, it will allow the ball to catch on the upswing and allow you to send the ball out a little further.
