Scoring Thoughts
Problem
You do not seem to play well until after playing out several holes.
Cure
Even as you practice before your round, you need to start thinking and visualizing how you will play out each hole. You should end your practice time on the driving range instead of ending it on the green. Start by making short putts. Increase your distance from the hole by sinking long putts, hitting bump and runs, and hitting your wedges around the green. Move to the driving range to slowly increase your yardages. This technique will help you gain better focus on your goals when you do start your round.
Therapy
As you stand on the tee box, look out and visualize the ball landing on the green. Picture the approach shot that it would take to get there. Imagine the shot that would reach that approach position. Work your way back to the tee box. It is a great way to find safe places to land the ball and to ingrain a positive image into your mind. If this is a course that you regularly play, pull out the score card. Imagine that you are playing the last few holes on the course as you practice. Because you normally have a better round later on in your game, this sense of accomplishment will help give you the confidence for a good start.
