Tip From the Archives
Scooping It
Problem
You know you are supposed to hit down on the ball with your irons but you still seem to scoop with them.
Cure
It is likely that you are keeping too much weight on your trailing leg as the clubhead moves through the impact zone. This will keep your body too far back, behind the ball, causing you to scoop it. Focus on trying to shift your weight onto your forward leg as you approach impact.
Therapy
At set up, remember to place more weight on your forward leg and use the key thought of getting your back heel off of the ground as you complete the swing. As you practice your short irons and wedges, address the ball with the heel of your trailing foot off of the ground. This will naturally cause you to have more weight on your forward foot to encourage a more descending swing.
