Sand Confusion

Problem

You are confused about how far you are supposed to hit into the sand on a normal bunker shot.

Cure

Depending on the person answering this dilemma, the will often say that you should hit anywhere from one to three inches behind the ball and they are correct. Do not worry so much about where to hit into the ball but focus more on accelerating through the shot.

Therapy

The exact location that you need to hit into the sand for any given sand shot is not important. Practice hitting all of your wedges out of the bunker. Open the clubface. Focus on swinging aggressively into the sand at least one inch behind the ball while using the bounce of the club. Continuous acceleration during the downswing and into the follow through is key for executing the shot.
