Safe Odds

Problem

You want to find a strategy that will help you improve your game around the green.

Cure

Before you commit yourself to a shot, you want to ask yourself, what are the odds that you will be successful at it? If there is only about a 10 percent chance that you will land the ball where you want it to, then you know you are likely to add on extra strokes to your game. So, play within your skill level and your score will be lower because of it.

Therapy

Work on your greenside shots until you are comfortable playing with at least one club in your bag. In a stressful situation around the green, you will have this club to rely on. Never rely on hitting the shot perfectly in a sticky situation. Instead, plan on finding the safest place to land the ball and use the easiest club in your bag to do it. If the flag is close to the edge of the green, do not be afraid to aim for an open area on the green. A long putt is better than allowing the ball to go off the edge into a hazard.
