Tip From the Archives

Rushed Putter

Problem

You are having difficulties making long putts.

Cure

Check to make sure your backstroke is not too short. It is very common for golfers to take a quick or short stroke back as they do with short putts but with a longer follow through in order to compensate for an inadequate backstroke.

Therapy

Think about making a pendulum swing where the backstroke and forward stroke are the same in length. So think about the length of the follow through that you would normally take for this putt. Does it end up being excessively long to make up for an extremely short backstroke? How long should it be? Try to get a feel for it during your practice swing. Try to match your backswing with your forward swing. Use the length of the stroke to control the distance of the putt instead of trying to control it with a rapid and powerful putt.
