Tip From the Archives
Rough Enough
Problem
You cannot ever hit the ball out of the tall rough.
Cure
Using a firm grip is essential to keep the clubface square. If the ball is sitting up in the tall rough, set up to it with the club more behind the ball. However, if the ball is sitting down in the tall grass, do not focus so much on where the ball will make contact with the clubface. This is because in the deep rough, the grooves or ridges on the clubface are not relevant. What is important is that you can hit down on the ball without allowing the clubface to turn due to the clubhead getting tangled up in the grass.
Therapy
In the deep grass, you need to sacrifice a little distance in order get the ball up and out. Set an even amount of your bodyweight on both of your your feet. With a lot of grass between the clubface and the ball, it is important to focus on coming in very steep on top of it. This will help prevent the clubhead from becoming caught and it will help the ball to pop out. If you truly cannot afford to lose distance, tilt shaft of the club towards the target with the ball placed towards the back of your stance. Place a little more of your body weight on your forward leg.
