Tip From the Archives

Rolling Short

Problem

You tend to come up short on your putts.

Cure

Remember to continue accelerating the putter after you make contact with the ball.

Therapy

Set a goal for yourself to putt 17 inches past the hole. Most balls that are destined to make it into the hole are rolling at the speed to stop somewhere between 16 to 18 inches past the cup. This will also set you up for an easy second shot if you do not make it in. A good drill to help you reach the hole is to lay a club on the ground about two feet behind the hole. Stand near the fringe on the green. Practice putting so that the ball stops rolling before reaching the club. Once you can consistently stop the ball before hitting the club, move it 6 inches closer to the hole. This way you can have the ball stop within the 16 to 18 inch range.
