Reverse Pivot Flop

Problem

Every time you try to make a short flop shot you seem to make a reverse pivot.

Cure

Do not purposely tip or lean your upper body back, behind the ball. This often sets to player up to flip the club with their wrists or attempt to scoop the ball.

Therapy

Select one of your highest lofted clubs and make sure you use the bounce of the club. To improve your short flop shot, set your weight so that it is evenly distributed over both legs; this will help you stay more centered and balanced. Move the ball just a little forward in your stance. You want to feel as if the club is just an extension of your trailing arm as you take the shot. You can allow the club to pass your hands just a little bit during the shot.

I would agree that good balance is essential but here is the key for me in a shot like this. I start with good balance between heels and toes but I carry more weight on the front leg (left for right-handers). Stance should be slightly open to target and hands slightly ahead of the ball. Since your club is more open than a normal chip this shot will require a longer swing than you will be accustomed to. Control your distance by lengthening or shortening your swing, not by speeding it up. The swing itself will be slightly more wristy and more upright. I do not recommend ever letting the club head get ahead of the hands. This shot takes lots of practice to confidently put it in your arsenal but well worth having.
