Releasing with Irons

Problem

You do not know how the release should differ from long to shot iron shots.

Cure

Make sure that you are rotating your forearms into impact for a good release with your long irons. Just be careful that you do not do this with your shorter irons because this is too much of a release. With short irons, it is better to focus on pointing the clubface and lead hand at the sky during the follow through.

Therapy

Work on trying to rotate your forearms with your long shots. You want the trailing hand to rotate over the lead hand as you move through impact. Hold the club in your hand and practice this movement a couple of times before addressing the ball to help give you the proper feel of this motion. You need use more wrist cock and have the clubface and lead hand pointing at the sky as you bring the club up into the follow through with the shorter irons. This is because they are important in gaining loft. Practice without a club a couple of times to gain the feel of a steep downward blow while thinking about making a V shaped swing. As you are bringing the club up into the follow through, watch to see the back of your lead wrist and the clubface to point up towards the sky.
