Release and Tempo

Problem

You hit the ball inconsistently because you swing too fast and this causes poor tempo and a limited release at impact.

Cure

Focus on swinging slowly with just your trailing arm to improve the release and contact.

Therapy

Tee a ball up and practice swinging with a 5 or 6 iron using just your trailing arm. Start by making slow and smooth three quarter length backswings. Allow only gravity and the weight of the club to pull your arm through the forward swing. As you do this, you should notice the trailing hand rotate the club until the clubface is square without any effort. Repeat this a dozen times before you add a little acceleration into the downswing. Now start making three full length swings the same way. Repeat at this speed three more times. Continue to add a little more power after completing more three swings until you have reached full power. Note how much better you make contact with the ball with a slower and smoother swing. If you add in too much power, you will start to see inconsistent ball flight.
