Tip From the Archives

Relax Your Arms

Problem

You only slice the ball when you are tense and you know it is not because you are overswinging or trying to swing too hard.

Cure

Even if you cannot mentally relax, focus on softening the muscles in your hands and arms. You will slice the ball if your grip pressure is too hard or the muscles in your arms and hands are too tense.

Therapy

Notice how when you are tense that your swing and release does not seem to happen naturally. It will cause you to open the clubface before you contact the ball. Whether or not you are able to relax these muscles under pressure there is something you can focus on to help correct your slice. Focus on rotating the forearm of your trailing arm so that it turns over your forward arm as you approach the ball.

I was expecting something a little more pre-shot

GM once did a tip about how when your hands/arms are too tense that you should squeeze the club as hard as you can at address then regrip the club. This way you exhaust your muscles into relaxation. That has helped reduce my slice by a significant amount. Maybe with the rotation as my key thought, it will eliminate it completely.
