Tip From the Archives
Reading the Green
Problem
Coming up short with putts when below the hole or unpredictable ball play.
Cure
Evaluate the slope behind the hole. If it slopes away, watch your speed and play it safe. If there is an uphill slope or the green flattens out, be more aggressive.
Therapy
Mark the ball and look at the line from both sides, from the hole and the ball. Study the grain, it will be slippery when putting with the grain. So look to see if there is any shine to the grass. If so, this indicates that grass will have a faster roll to it because it is down-grain. You need to be more aggressive when the grain is facing away from the hole. So, if the grass looks dull, it will roll much slower. If the grass is bent towards the left or right, it will break in the direction of the grain.
