Tip From the Archives
Random Accuracy
Problem
Sometimes you read the green great and other times you have great difficulty with it.
Cure
Occasionally this problem can be because you are simply better at predicting the break from one side of your line than the other due to eye dominance and visualization skills.
Therapy
Spend extra time on the putting green before teeing off. Set a ball down on the green about 4 feet away from the fringe. Go to the left side of your line and look at the break. Imagine how the break will affect your line and how it will roll. Leave a marker at the halfway point of your line. Then stand behind your ball and look at the line. Now go to the right side of your line and imagine how the ball will roll to the hole. Leave another ball marker at the halfway point of this line. Putt the ball and see which marker was the most accurate to your line. Select a new location on the green and start reading from the right side this time. Alternate between reading the green from the left and right sides of your line. You might be surprised that you are reading your line better from one side and this is why your accuracy seems so random.
This makes sense. I often over estimate it when it's going to break right. Expecting some sort of epic turn, when in fact it's just a subtle little break that looks worse due to a shadow. Go figure I have an easier time when it breaks left because it just looks flatter. Maybe it's from the time from the time of the day. I tend to play in the late afternoons when the shadows are drifting across the greens.
