Putting Yips

Problem

You have the yips and you have already tried to cure them with positive thoughts with no success.

Cure

You need to either change your grip or relearn how to putt all over again. This is because when you suffer from the yips, there is something disrupting the way your brain and muscles in your dominate hand or arm controls the clubface. This will most likely cause a tremor during the downswing or at the point of impact because of unintentionally adding an additional force due to the anticipation of contact.

Therapy

Prop three tees along the front half of the ball to prevent it from moving forwards. Now practice swinging the club as you normally would when putting. The ball will not move and change your perception of the way you impact the ball; thus overloading the yip response. After trying this technique, practice playing putting pool. This is when you use one ball to make contact with the actual ball that you intend on moving at a specific direction. If these techniques do not help, try different gripping styles on your putter or alternating between different ball types; such as foam, ping pong, or wiffle balls to help change the way it feels when you make contact.
