Tip From the Archives
Putting Speed
Problem
Your putts keep breaking earlier or later than expected.
Cure
Try to improve the speed of your putts. Keep in mind that the speed will affect the line so practicing hitting at different speeds against the same break will give you a better feel for your putting.
Therapy
Using different colored balls, practice putting along the same line, from the same location but at different speeds. Leave the balls so you can compare how much the break affected each ball based on speed. Take note to see if the speed was too fast, does it break too late? Or when the speed is too slow, does it break too early? Do not be afraid to be a little aggressive with your putting speed if you normally come up short of the hole. Focus on trying to putt at a speed that would allow the ball to roll past the hole by at least sixteen inches.
