Putter Rotation

Problem

You notice that the putterhead does not stay on the target line throughout your stroke.

Cure

For most players, it would be ideal to keep the putter moving along the target line. However, the gripping style and build of the person can cause the putter to move along the outside or inside of the target line. This can become problematic if the putter is not square to the target at impact due to a rotation of the clubface.

Therapy

When your hands are below your shoulders, it will allow the putter to move straight back and forth, along the target line with no clubface rotation. Lay a strip of tape on the green or carpeting as you practice putting. Practice keeping your hands below your shoulders as you putt. Due to different body types, this may not be comfortable to you. It should not apply apply spin as long as you are able to square the clubface before impact. When you are standing up too tall, common with skinnier players, the putter will tend to move outside of the line, return at impact, and move outside of the line after impact. When your arms are stretched out too far away from your body, common in heavier players, the putterhead will move inside of the target line as you move the club away from the ball. It will become square at impact and move inside of the line after impact.
