Tip From the Archives
Putter Chip
Problem
You are unsure about what to play from the fringe.
Cure
If the ball is less than 50 feet away, then putt it in. Use a chipping motion with your putter when it is over 50 feet. If putting is not possible then use your lowest lofted club to hit as close to the pin as possible.
Therapy
When chipping from the fringe, avoid getting grass between your clubface and the ball. Use a narrow stance so that there is about five inches of space between your feet. Set more than half of your body weight on your forward leg to help encourage a descending blow and clean contact with the ball. Even if you are using your putter to chip the ball, it is important that you set the ball far back in your stance near your back foot.
