Putt With an Iron
Problem
You forgot your putter.
Cure
Do not panic if you do not have one to borrow. Use this as a time to challenge yourself to help hone in on your ability to aim and to make a level stroke using one of your irons.
Therapy
Several golfers opt to putt with a hybrid, driver, or wood because it is easier to keep these clubs level on the green. This is because of their shape and because these clubs are often swept or kept level for the first 6 inches of the backswing anyways. Other players will select a wedge because they have already tapped a few in when they were close to the cup. However, a true challenge is to use one of your middle or longer irons instead. This forces you to think about making a smooth, short, and level stroke. Set up with the club square to your target and you will notice that your hands are well ahead of the ball. This is why it would be easier to putt with a lower lofted club. It may take several attempts before you have mastered this because you have to think about speed and keeping the clubhead low to the ground. Play this club around the green as well. Your comfort level with fringe shots and even chipping with this iron will improve.
