Tip From the Archives
Pull Through Impact
Problem
You notice that the ball wobbles as it rolls on the green while putting.
Cure
Work on making square contact with the ball. You will add a little spin on the ball if you come at it from a side angle, causing it to wiggle across the green.
Therapy
Use a striped range ball, draw one or two lines on a ball, or buy one with lines already on it. Set the ball on the green so that the lines point towards the cup. If you make square contact with the ball, the lines will continue to point towards the cup after impact until the break affects the roll. You will see the lines turn as it rolls if you added sidespin onto the ball. Practice making ten foot putts several balls roll with the lines rolling straight for about two feet. You should notice that it is easier to achieve this if you pull the putter through impact rather than pushing it. This is because the putter is more likely to move straight, following the in the same path your hands are moving. If you are pushing the putter through impact, the clubface is likely to turn or move off of the target line.
