Tip From the Archives
Pull It
Problem
You want a more ball compression and power in your swing.
Cure
Your hands should be ahead of the clubhead during the downswing and a few inches past impact. You want to have the feeling as if the grip is pulling the clubhead into the hitting area. If the clubhead moves ahead of your hands before this point shows that you are decelerating your swing and losing distance.
Therapy
Either video tape your swing or practice in a mirror to see the position of your hands just before, during, and after impact. If you can practice in front of a mirror, slowly swing and watch carefully to see if you are pulling the club or if it is pulling your hands through impact. If the clubhead is ahead of your hands, notice how the wrist on your trailing arm is straightening too soon. You will need the wrist on your trailing arm to be bent back as it enters the contact zone to help pull the clubhead into impact.
