Prevent Tilts and Sways in Your Swing
Problem
Many people sway or tilt during their swing because they are not turning at the hips correctly. This will cause you to over swing your arms, prevent a proper weight shift, and take the club off of its swinging path.
Cure
Brace your heel of your forward foot firmly into the ground during the downswing and through impact. This will help minimize any swaying or tilting and the momentum of the downswing will be transferred from the legs to the hips and arms for a quicker upper body rotation. If you have an excessive amount of hip turn, then your weight will shift to the outside of the heel on your back foot, which will prevent the necessary weight shift needed on your forward foot during the downswing. When your arms swing too hard, it can override this proper weight shift; causing your body to be pulled around by the force of your arms and club swinging. Your weight will then be on your toes and the path of your swing will be outside of the target line, leading to a reverse pivot and a weak ball flight.
Therapy
Stand tall and relaxed without a club. Place your feet shoulder width apart then bend slightly forward from your hips and slightly from the knees. Look straight in front of you and place your hands on your hips. If you are a right handed player, turn your body to the right and you should notice that your weight is on your right side. If it is not, then practice turning until you feel the proper weight shift to the right as it should on your backswing. Once you have the correct weight shift, practice with your club and then imagine your weight propelling downward into your left heel without swaying during your downswing.
