Tip From the Archives
Premature Spin
Problem
You slice or sky the ball because you slide or tilt and turn your body towards the target too early and excessively during your forward swing. This can cause too steep of a downswing, especially so when you are using your driver.
Cure
You need to limit the rotation of your body to better allow your arms to control the clubhead to keep it level and on the swinging path.
Therapy
Set up so that the ball is in the center of your stance. Place a brick under your forward foot or lift it and keep it off of the ground during your entire swing. This will help prevent the shifting of your weight onto your forward foot, your legs will maintain their knee flex, and your trailing shoulder will remain back. All of these factors will help prevent spinning your upper body prematurely or excessively during the downswing.
