Tip From the Archives
Practice Your Shot
Problem
You take a practice swing but it is mostly for show or you are a player that needs many practice swings.
Cure
Even if you are an excellent player, a practice swing is a great way to allow you to visualize and commit to your shot. You will notice improved range of motion and accuracy when you truly rehearse your swing.
Therapy
Try to clear your mind of any hazards, scores, or of any other negative thoughts. Know where you want to land the ball to help you set up for the proper aim and swing path. Do not fixate on the result of this swing; instead, decide on the swing style you need to reach your target. Then simply try to match the swing length, arc, and path that you visualized. If your practice swing does not feel correct, take another one. This way you will imprint the correct muscle memory for your actual shot. If you feel that you need more than two practice swings, do not do it. This is probably a sign of tension or lack of practice and it will delay the pace of play. Shake it off, take a long, deep breath. Just think about keeping a smooth tempo.
