Practice Notes

Problem

You cannot seem to play as well as you do when you are just practicing at the driving range.

Cure

One thing you lack on the range is the pressure to make par. In addition to this, many players overlook the importance of practicing their putting when they are at the range. So take an equal amount of time to work on your short game and remember to set specific goals for each swing while at the range.

Therapy

Take notes on a 3x5 card at the driving range when you are hitting well. If you worked something out in your swing, write it down. State what the problem was and how you fixed it. Describe the feeling you had when it happened. If it felt like your hands were gliding through the ball and almost floating into the follow through, write it down. You should also take notes whenever you hit a great shot while playing a round. Once you have a similar lie or situation, pull your card out and remind yourself of the details of the shot.

You hear it all the time, you play like you practice. If you goof off on the range and can't focus, how do you expect to play well on the course? One game the cboys and I play is quarter, nickel, dime. We each pick flags and clubs and three balls. The closes wins the quarter, the next wins the nickel and the last the dime. Each ball is a shot with a little pressure. We never win or loose more than a dollar or so, but the bragging rights keep you focused and you will have a more productive practice "round".
