Powerful Backswing Coil

Problem

You wish to improve your ball striking ability and driving distance by learning how to coil properly.

Cure

You should have a relaxed grip during your entire swing for a good clubhead release and speed. The key to a powerful swing is to establish a strong coil during the backswing. A strong coiling action is beneficial because it helps support a proper weight shift as your forward foot remains planted on the ground to limit your hip movement and therefore helps encourage a stronger rotation of your shoulders.

Therapy

Instead of simply lifting the club up with your hands during your backswing, you need to use and stretch your entire body as you turn away from the ball. Try testing your coiling ability by aligning a club across the front of your shoulders; allow the clubhead to be pointing towards the target. Turn your shoulders so that the clubhead is now above your back foot. This should help you understand a proper shoulder turn. The button of your pants should be pointing just before your big toe of your right foot. If the button is pointing back any further, then you have too much of a hip turn to support a powerful swing.
