Tip From the Archives
Poor Tempo
Problem
You do not have a smooth swing due pausing too long at the top of your backswing. This causes you to pull the club down hard to in an attempt to make up for the deceleration in your swing. You will likely hit the ball fat or have other undesirable results.
Cure
Pausing at the top of your swing should only happen naturally as you change from your backswing into your forward swing. Purposely adding a pause into the swing will only disrupt your tempo. Instead of thinking about the pause, picture your swing as one constant accelerating motion with a full finish.
Therapy
Practice hitting shots at the driving range as often as possible until you feel that you have a smooth flowing swing. Every time you practice, concentrate on rotating your belt buckle counterclockwise, towards the target as you begin your forward swing. By completely rotating your hips during the downswing, your arms will be able to fully extend, accelerate, and therefore easily produce more power at contact. So relax as you play and if you need keys to remember to help distract you, focus on making a complete hip rotation and follow-through.
