Point Your Thumb

Problem

Based on your great turn and speed, you know you should have longer drives but cannot pinpoint the problem.

Cure

You might be hitting from the top or releasing the clubhead too early. Lighten your grip pressure and delay your wrist hinge during the downswing. This will give you a more powerful clubhead movement during impact.

Therapy

To help you visualize how to delay this wrist hinge think about the cocking action you see during your backswing and forward swing. Notice where your thumbs are pointing as your wrists are hinged back. When you begin to cock your wrists, the thumb on your trailing thumb should point at your trailing shoulder during the backswing. Unwind your lower body as you start your forward swing. Simply allow gravity to pull the clubhead down before releasing into impact. As you do, you should notice the trailing thumb pointing towards your trailing shoulder during the forward swing. Focus on trying to keep your thumb pointing towards your shoulder as long as possible. By allowing your lower body unwind combined with gravity doing most of the downward clubhead movement, it will make the delayed release feel more natural.
