Tip From the Archives

Plugged Near the Green

Problem

You have a plugged lie in a greenside bunker.

Cure

It would be ideal to use a 54 degree sand wedge. If you do not have one, select a club with less bounce than a 58 degree sand wedge.

Therapy

Due to the lie, you will want to use a firmer grip. Set the ball further back in your stance than you usually do in a normal bunker shot. Set up with the clubface square to the target line. If it is really plugged, you might want to even close the clubface a little. Get stable footing to support an aggressive swing. The ball will come out lower and roll more than usual out of the bunker so select your target accordingly.
