Tip From the Archives

Plugged Above

Problem

The ball is partially plugged in the side of the greenside bunker. You now have to hit the ball while it is above your feet.

Cure

The ball will not come out as fast as it would on a flatter lie in the sand. So go ahead and blast the ball out. Adjust your aim because if you are a right handed player, the ball will fly left or if you are a left handed player, the ball will fly to the right of your target.

Therapy

Even though the ball is above your feet, you still want to dig your feet in to help stabilize your footing. Open the face a little and choke down on the grip to help even out the lie. Hit into the sand about one inch behind the ball. You do not have to worry about opening the club a lot because it will come out high with very little spin when the clubface is open a little bit.
