Tip From the Archives
Playing in Cold Weather
Problem
Bulky clothing can hinder your swing. Using cold or freezing golf balls will reduce how far the ball will fly through the air.
Cure
Keep your head and hands warm as much as possible by wearing a warm hat and gloves on your hands between each hole. Use thin layers such as long underwear, turtlenecks, an outer shell, a light jacket, or thin sweater. Keep your golf balls inside your house overnight because the warmer the balls, the faster they will fly through the cold air.
Therapy
Injuries are most likely when it is cold outside because your body is trying to keep tense and conserve heat. This will make your swing unnatural, stiff and cause an unpredictable ball flight. Cold days are the best days to walk the course to keep your blood flowing in your muscles for a better swing. Before playing, walk around a little to get warm, stretch, and do arm circles to help increase the blood circulation to your arms. Before teeing off, take several practice swings; starting out swinging very slowly and working up to a natural, free flowing swing.
