Tip From the Archives
Pen Drill
Problem
Your swing feels tight or restricted and you are not getting the distance you want off of the tee box.
Cure
Remember to allow a little head movement during your swing. Trying to keep your head down and staring at the ball tends to tighten up the muscles in your body and therefore restrict the amount of turn you make during the backswing.
Therapy
When you have a good set up, your chin will be well off of your chest, so that your shoulder can move freely under it. So, place a pen in your mouth and swing the club back. Watch to see where the pen points, your head should turn away from the target, so that the pen points well past your trailing foot by the time you reach the top of your backswing.
That seems like a great tip - I haven't taken it to the range yet, but just stood next to my computer and tried it out. This is the first tip I've seen that gives a way to gage your head movement. Not only will I be able to see if I'm restraining my swing, but I should also be able to see if I'm moving up or down (changing spine angle) based on the movement of the pen.
Your tips are timeless and valuable. Thanks.
