Tip From the Archives

Partially Plugged

Problem

Your ball is partially plugged in the sand bunker so that it is less than half buried with little or no crater around it.

Cure

The more experience you have with sand shots, the further forward you can place the ball in your stance for this lie and use an open clubface. If you are not used to this shot, put the ball towards the back of your stance with a square and hooded clubface.

Therapy

Place the majority of your weight onto your forward leg and place your hands slightly ahead of the ball. You want to use the sharp, leading edge of the club to dig deep into the sand about one inch behind the ball. Make sure you limit the clubhead release through the shot so you are able to hit the club sharply into the sand.
