Tip From the Archives

Pace It

Problem

You are having difficulty feeling the correct pace or distance of your putts.

Cure

Work on lagging the ball close to the hole instead of trying to sink it in on the first stroke on the green. Just simply set yourself up for an easy tap in and you will find that you are taking less strokes overall.

Therapy

Practicing your stroke with different length backswings at a steady pace is important. Make sure you are accelerating through the ball. Do not forget to look at the grain of the grass and the slope of the lie to help you determine if it will speed up or slow down the roll of the ball. Take a lighter grip during your practice strokes to help you feel the pace of the putt a little better. Be certain to make contact with the ball at the sweet point of your putter, accelerate through the ball, and to at least match the length of your backstroke with your forward stroke, if not more.

I do not like this concept of "set yourself up for an easy tap in" - the aim of golf is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes possible, not as is suggested, lay up to the hole and take another putt to get it in. You should always putt to make it, putt to get the ball in the hole, not near it. If you begin putting to get the ball close, you are conceding that you will take extra strokes, getting in the mindset of putting to make it will be far more helpful.
