Overshooting a Chip Shot

Problem

You always hit past the pin when chipping even though you try hard to get the ball up into the air.

Cure

The greater level of difficulty for your shot, the further the ball should be back in your stance and the greater loft you will need. Trust the wedge will give you the loft you desire, as it was designed to do. Do not try to help lift the ball up into the air. Doing so will only speed up your downswing and the ball will fly past the hole.

Therapy

Place a little more weight onto your forward leg. Think of your hands, arms, wrists, and shoulders as being one solid triangle. Keep your hands, wrists and body still as you swing the club back using only your triangle for the motion. If you have a long chip, allow a little amount of wrist action. To help learn how to keep your lower body still and improve chipping, try practicing while leaning your forward leg against a chair. By bracing your forward leg against the chair, it will help you start placing more weight onto your front leg as you create a sharp, downward blow with limited wrist action.
