Tip From the Archives
Overactive Hips
Problem
You swing off of the target line due to excessive spinning of the hips during your backswing. This causes an over the top swing with a loss of distance and accuracy.
Cure
You need to limit the amount you rotate your hips and work on rotating your shoulders more.
Therapy
Find your most lofted iron that is long enough for the shaft to reach the height of your hips when the clubhead is on the ground. Set up to the ball with another club and place the lofted iron under your forward foot. You will want the shaft of the lofted iron to stand upright about two inches from the target side of your forward hip. Focus on rotating your hips away from the clubshaft when you practice your backswing. As you approach impact, you will want your forward hip to slide forward and make contact with the shaft. If you are turning your hips too much during your backswing then your hip will not touch the shaft. You will need to focus on trying to touch the clubshaft your forward hip before you start trying to produce more of a shoulder turn.
