Tip From the Archives

One Unit

Problem

You swing too much with your hands or arms or possibly allow your shoulders to control your swing. This will cause you to have a poor tempo or swing too fast.

Cure

In order to improve your rhythm during your backswing, you will need move your hands, arms, hips, and shoulders back at the same time.

Therapy

Take a long club and set up so the end of the grip is pressing against the center of your chest. Your hands should be holding the club towards the middle of the shaft so your arms are extended normally. Now practice bringing the club back so your hands, arms, and shoulders move back as one solid unit. You want your shoulders and hips moving away from the ball at the same time. Start out moving the club back slowly to help gain the feeling of moving your hands, arms, and shoulders as one unit and ensure that your hips are moving back at the same time as your shoulders. Slowly work your way up to a full swing with all body parts moving in sequence.
