Tip From the Archives
One Handed Chip
Problem
You have difficulty chipping and the ball flies left or right of the target.
Cure
Improve your backswing by keeping your forward wrist flat. Most chipping errors occur during the backswing; including overactive wrists, picking the club up, swinging too far outside or inside so you are unable to bring it back in line before contact. The ball will fly to the left or right of the target if you do not follow through after impact.
Therapy
Make several practice swings with just your lead arm and you will notice the important roll it has in keeping the clubface square throughout the swing. Be sure to keep your forward wrist flat and make a full follow through. You know you hit correctly because you will hear a crisp contact. Anytime you are having problems chipping, return to swinging with just your forward arm for improved contact.
