Tip From the Archives
On One Leg
Problem
You lack a good release and you often fail to feel any weight shift during your swing.
Cure
When you are able to transfer your body weight during your swing, you will be able to prevent numerous swing errors. So even if it does not feel natural to you at first, practice incorporating weight transfer into your swing.
Therapy
Force a weight shift into your swing by lifting the heel of your leading foot off of the ground during your backswing. Pick the heel of your trailing foot off of the ground during your forward swing. You might want to practice this without a ball until the weight transfer is starting to feel natural. Begin hitting balls once you are able to keep a smooth, flowing tempo. If you tend to keep your weight on your trailing leg at impact, try hitting some balls while standing only on your leading foot. It will encourage a better release and give you the feeling of having your weight on your forward leg as you hit through the ball. This is also great to improving your since of balance and a good reminder to engage your abs during your golf swing because you will be able to maintain better balance during this drill if your abs are engaged.
If you can't stand on one foot, try putting your feet together - accomplishes the same thing, and is a useful way to start a session at the driving range.
