Off the Deck

Problem

You are playing a par 5 and your drive did not go very far.

Cure

If the ball is sitting up, pull out your driver and hit it off the deck. However, if you have a tight lie, you will be safer using your three wood instead.

Therapy

Try practicing this in your backyard or at the driving range. To hit your driver off the deck, you will want to set the ball back a little farther in your stance than usual. Open your stance and set your hands so they are aligned with the ball. Keep your lower body still. Focus on maintaining a good rhythm as you make a full shoulder turn and sweep the ball off of the grass. This is not the kind of shot that you want to catch the ball on your upswing because do not want to allow a lot of grass to come in between the ball and the clubhead.
