Nip Chip off the Sand

Problem

You are playing from wet sand, thirty to forty yards away from the hole from a sand bunker with a flat or low lip.

Cure

Try taking a nip chip for a crisp and clean shot off of the sand. Keep in mind that depending on the length of your swing arc, the ball could fly further than a normal wedge shot.

Therapy

Place the ball an inch inside your front heel with the clubface open so it points about forty degrees to the right of the target line. Your hands should be placed straight above the ball and will need to retain this placement throughout the swing to allow enough backswing to stop the ball quickly on the green. The clubface should be flattened enough to help maintain a wide swing angle during the backswing and forward swing. Be careful, the loft of the clubface is reduced too much then it will cause the ball to become buried into the sand. Cock your wrists early for a steeper swing arc. Limit your hip and shoulder turn, so as you swing back, you will bring the club more around your body than over it.
