Tip From the Archives

Ninety Degree Rule

Problem

You no longer hit with the same amount of power you are used to getting.

Cure

Double check your posture to make sure you are not slouching. Keep your chin off of your chest. Be certain to have a slight knee flex with a straight spine that tilts downward from the hips.

Therapy

Swing a long shoelace or a rope in a circle out in front of your body. Make sure your arm is straight out so that it is parallel to the ground. Notice how the rope swings the fastest when it is swinging a straight up and down. The rope is swinging the fastest when it is 90 degrees from your arm. Now consider how this relates to your golf swing. Most clubs are angled at 60 degrees. Why is that so? It is because of the average players spine tilt. You want to tilt your chest forward about 30 degrees so that there is a 90 degree angle between the shaft and your spine for the maximum amount of power in your swing.
