Tip From the Archives

Nice and Easy

Problem

You have a fast swing but still need to get more distance out of your drives.

Cure

Try swinging slower with a little less of a backswing. Many players swing back too far and try to kill the ball but you could be surprised how much farther you could hit if you just slow your swing down a little.

Therapy

First, set up without a ball and work on swinging with a consistent rhythm to help synchronize your body and arms. Take a slower swing, starting from when you take the club away from the ball. Use only a three quarter of a backswing to help avoid over extending your body; which could ruin your posture, swing plane, rhythm, and reduce swing speed. Once you have completed your follow through, immediately start swinging again. Make it a steady pattern until you really have a feel for taking a nice and easy swing. Then set up to the ball and hit it the same way to see if you have gained any distance.

Try humming a slow tune, like \\\"The Sky Boat Song\\\" or \\\"The Blue Danube Waltz\\\" or a piece you like. It works wonders for your swing rythym

dont ever slow up just before hitting the ball

I find that this works great if I work at strengthening my wrists with a squeeze ball.

This works. A heavier club head helps, too. A D3 for woods. Matched with a slightly stiffer shaft and mid size grip helped me. Kept my hands quiet and let the club head do its work.
