Tip From the Archives
Nearsighted Focus
Problem
You get stressed out around the green during tournaments.
Cure
Do not allow yourself to fixate on the number of strokes you and your opponents are taking. Be nearsighted and only see and think about your current shot. Everything else is just a blur.
Therapy
Challenge yourself as you practice and play for fun. Set specific goals for yourself for each shot on the course. Get into the habit of only focusing on the details of this shot. Play five balls when practicing particular shots at the range, around the practice green, and on the green. Decide how you should hit them and keep practicing them until all five meet these standards. Once your skill level is improved, decide that you need to hit 3, 4, or 5 of these balls in a row exactly according to your standards before moving on to the next swing style. Know what to expect in terms of loft, feel, and result so you can focus on these as your goals when you are playing in the next tournament.
