More or Less Bounce

Problem

You are unsure of how much bounce to use in difficult situations.

Cure

In general, use less bounce in short grass and if the sand is course, heavy, shallow or wet. It is the best bet to use more bounce when the sand is light, fluffy, or deep. It would also be useful to use plenty of bounce in the tall rough.

Therapy

A great way to remember how much bounce to use is to think about how steep your swing should be in the given situation. If your swing is supposed to be steep, use this as your cue to use more bounce. In contrast, the flatter the swing the less bounce on the sole is needed. Practice your various lies using more or less bounce based on your lie and swing plane. You will find that you are a more consistent player once you are using the appropriate bounce for the situation.

Clarify: How does one 'use less bounce'? Do you mean to use a wedge with less bounce on the sole as you imply? Does this mean that you'll need a high bounce and low bounce wedge? Or is it a way of grasping or swinging the club?

Open your wedge or club for more bounce. Square your club or close it for less bounce.

For less bounce, use your pitching wedge. For more bounce, use your sandwedge.

Also, generally speaking, a lob wedge will have less bouncs than a sand wedge.

Most sand wedges are 16 degrees of bounce , a lob (58degrees with 8 degrees of bounce) should be used in the fairway or where the grass is very short.
