Tip From the Archives
Mirror Finish
Problem
You lose power because you decelerate instead of making a powerful follow through or you flip the club up into the air after impact.
Cure
Your forward swing should continue to gain speed well past impact. Make sure that it is powered with the arms and shoulders.
Therapy
Record a professional golf tournament and select a player that shows the front side of their body as they swing. Slowly play their swing a couple of times and look where their clubface, hands, arms, and shoulders are located just after impact. Now replay it several times, focusing just on where their arms and shoulders are positioned at impact and they move during their follow through. Imagine yourself making that same swing. Now stand in front of a mirror and copy their swing from impact into a completed follow through. Repeat it but this time pause at impact for a second and then swing using only your shoulders power the rest of the swing into a full follow through. Do this drill at least a dozen times or until you are able to train your arms and shoulders to accelerate the club into the follow through.
Great lesson. I might also suggest recording your own swing by bringing a digital camera to the range and comparing the two.
